When I was a kid, I always wanted to go to a jungle and delve into its mysteries. Luckily, when I was last in Hawaii, I got to explore a jungle on the East side of the Big Island. Enjoy the 3D images I shot there:
Maxwell Point Tunnel in 3D
Back when I was a kid, I saw lots of tunnels, lava tubes and caves. From Minnesota, to Hawaii, to Oregon, and Washington. I love exploring caves. When I was about six my parents took my sister and I to see the tunnel carved into a cliff in Oceanside, Oregon. This tunnel was the only way to get to Tunnel Beach, that is without a boat. Well the tunnel is open off and on, but closes now and again due to rockslides, cave-ins and other erosive dangers. Here is a a 3D shot of the tunnel from 2010.
Silver Falls in 3D
Shot some images at Silver Falls State Park sometime ago, here are the 3D images. I wasn’t able to capture many shots of the falls due to the large number of people at the part that day. My 2 exposure method makes things difficult but not impossible if the images need to be edited.
The Great Mazinga....in 3D
When I was my daughter’s age, I was really into the Shogun warriors. I had several of them, though only one of the 24” figures. For my birthday, I got this amazing AMT Model of the Great Mazinga, and my dad built it for me. I still have it so I shot it in 3D, just for kicks!
Vasquez Rocks in 3D
With all this Star Trek stuff I have been posting about, I wanted to share some 3D images I took at Vasquez Rocks in Southern California. I’m sure everyone has seen the episodes of Star Trek famously shot at the beautiful Vasquez Rocks formation (at least 10). I shot these in winter months of 2007.
This was from my second trip there. I accidentally found myself in the area without my gear, but vowed to return again to get these images. Hope you enjoy them.
3D Images from Hawaii part 1
Here are a few images in 3D from Paradise. Loved visiting the big island, wish I could have stayed….
Many of these were shot hand held, so there may be a bit of a glitch to them, but I think they turned out all all things considered.
Exciting View Master Reels!
Holy Cow! King Kong on View Master!?!?
Yeah, ashamed to say I never knew this was a thing but my friend showed me her set of King Kong reels for the View-Master. Unfortunately she does not have the package or the booklet, but whatever. The package looked like this when it came out:
The Reels are a bit fades but it is super cool to see Kong in 3D!
Star Trek View-Master Reels!
My sister gave me this years ago but not having a View-Master to view them, they went into a cupboard for nearly a decade. Now I’ve been able to check it out!
The images and story all come from the season 2 episode “The Omega Glory”. Not one of my favorite episodes, but anything from the original Star Trek is cool nonetheless.
Images were shot on set with a stereo camera. I wish they shot them all like this!
I read on Memory Alpha, the most comprehensive Star Trek Wiki, that View-Master actually had more sets for Star Trek, including a set from the animated series, and The Motion Picture, among others. Very excited for those other sets, and I need to keep my eyes peeled for them in the future!
3D image of the week La Brea Tar pits
Took these images of the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.
For the image above I used a Lensbaby 3G, which I believe, is no longer in production. It allowed me to to alter the focal plane and lock it in place for both exposures. Though it is not apparent here, this allowed the blur to have dimension as well. You may see that on other shots I have where the subject is closer to the camera.
Tramway Gas Station New Angle
Just found another angle of the Tramway Gas Station in Palm Springs California.
A Classic Bowling Alley in 3D
I love bowling alleys, and it is rare to find them around anymore. Even more rare is seeing a bowling alley that was never updated to the flashy screens and electronic scoring systems. I found this bowling alley in Hilo on the big island of Hawaii. The staff there were very nice and allowed me to come in and shoot before they opened and I took some great shots of their amazing bowling alley.
Summer is going fast...
Well this summer is going by so fast. Just a little image of my Hamms Bear after being surprised in the shower in 3D.
More shots of the Tramway Gas Station/Visitors Center...
Here are a couple more views from the Tramway Gas Station in Palm Springs. Such an amazing design for a gas station. Makes me wish the “Bomber” gas station was still around, here in Portland! Don’t for get your 3D glasses!
These were shot on a very windy day, and I had to do some creative post work to contend with the subjects moving in the background between the 2 shots I took to create the anaglyph 3D effect.
The Tramway Gas station was built in 1965 and designed by architects Albert Frey and Robson Chambers and is an iconic design from one of the mid century capitols of the world, Palm Springs.
Posting 3D Photography...
While going through my server and cleaning out files, I found some Anaglyph 3D images I have not posted anywhere before and thought it would be great to share these shots. You will need a pair of red and blue glasses to view these images just like the old 3D movies of the 50s.
My first Anaglyph shot in this series will be of the former Tramway Gas Station in Palm Springs. This iconic building has since been converted to a visitors center just outside of the city as you approach from LA.
Stay tuned for more anaglyph images from my archive and tutorials on how I created these images!
